Awesome!

The first ArnFest - held October 8th and 9th, 2005 at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL - was a smash success! Enthusiasts of vintage woodworking machinery came together to meet and share their knowledge of collecting, restoring and using old woodworking machinery (OWWM or "arn"). While many attendees were "members" of the OWWM.com web site and its accompanying discussion forum, several were not and that was great, too! The common bond was the shared interest in OWWM.

Where else can you go Old Arn Bull Riding? Only at ArnFest. Here Eric Tuck from Le Sueur, MN enjoys his newest piece of arn, a 1920-ish Peerless hack saw. Eric was the winner of the ArnFest raffle grand prize. Many an attendee lusted after this item, but Eric bagged it. Bob Kutella and Dick Streff look on, with obvious jealousy.

This shot reflects the fun and collegiality at the first ArnFest. Lots of fun was had, but much information was also shared. Attendees watched a live demonstration of babbit bearing replacement, learned brass machine tag restoration tricks, saw how to refinish machine hand wheels like a pro and plenty more. The Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) host site provided a spectacular backdrop. ArnFesters were treated to many behind-the-scenes tours of the train barns where the IRM staff is undertaking incredible locomotive and rail car restorations of mind-boggling proportions. And certainly, one of the highlights was watching the IRM woodshop's Berlin 3-drum sander go through its paces.
